Pure gold is rare, and difficult to refine. Whenever you are faced with adversity, know that you are pure gold, and remember the words of James, the brother of Jesus, our Lord and Savior: “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom let him ask of God who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:2-5).
How quickly do we forget that God is on our side? We are living in troubled times – times in which every day is filled with trouble. But we must see the joy that awaits us. Our troubles are nothing more than a test of our faith. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Why do you think God would allow His Son to be tempted by the devil? We have often associated the word tempt with the temptation to sin. But in the original Greek text, the word tempted as used here is peirazo (pi-rad-zo). It means to test. In other words, God was saying to Satan, “Test My Son and see for yourself that He is pure gold.”
When we encounter trouble, God is not testing us. He is presenting us to Satan to be tested. It’s as if God is saying, “Go ahead Satan, see for yourself; my children are pure gold!” So Satan, being the devil that he is, bites on the gold; he scratches the gold, to see if he can scar it; then he turns the heat up on it. But when it cools down, it is still pure gold.
As believers, we are to walk by faith, without doubting. If we waiver, we will receive nothing from the Lord. Don’t be up one day and down the next. Remain stable in the middle of the storm. By faith, know that you are safe inside the ark. You might fall down but you won’t fall into the water. So count it all joy when you encounter trouble. The devil is only testing your faith. Regardless of what he throws at you, know that you are pure gold.
