The model father possesses certain characteristics that put him in a category by himself. It is natural for a father to display unconditional love for their children, but the model father takes love to another level. The model father possesses the gifts necessary for converting that unconditional love into character that will nurture his family in a unique way.
The Bible says the first man – Adam — was created in the likeness of God. As we honor our fathers on Father’s Day, let us remember fathers for their contributions to family, community, and their service to God. Let us also be mindful that the model father is above all a godly father who reflects the glory of our heavenly Father.
God has equipped all men with the qualities necessary to be good fathers, but the model father possesses 6 godlike characteristics that make him the model father. He must be:
God is faithful, therefore, the model father also must be faithful in all of his endeavors, but most especially he should be faithful to his wife (Ephesians 5:25-31) and children (Ephesians 6:4). Faithful defined is: strict or thorough in the performance of duty; true to one’s word; reliable, and trusted. The father is ordained by God to lead and teach his family the ways of God (Psalm 78:5-8). As the family head, the model father gives weight to his leadership role, taking nothing for granted.
Faithfulness is the most important value of that a father can have, because in his faithfulness, he imitates God who is faithful, and thereby proves his worthiness to both God and his family. The faithful father is firm in the performance of his duty as a husband (Colossians 3:19), as a good worker on his job (Ephesians 6:5-8), and most of all, in his performance as a father (Proverbs 22:6). He never ceases to make his children his first priority, and quitting is the farthest thing from his mind for he knows that God will help him complete his work as a father (Philippians 1:6). The faithful father always keeps his word to his children, for he knows their hearts are filled with anticipation, and for fear of disappointing them he will not break his promises. Because of his faithfulness his children know that they can rely on him for anything, and trust him for everything.
The second character of the model father is accountability. The responsible father always takes his responsibilities seriously. He understands that his children are a blessing from God (Psalm 127:3-5). Fathers sometimes lose sight of their accountability, but the accountable father understands that he is responsible for his family’s well-being. He takes the interests of his children to heart, doing whatever he can — according to his ability and knowledge — to make their dreams a reality. Fathers, be conscience of this fact: just as all are accountable to God, fathers are likewise accountable to God for their families (Hebrews 4:13).
Like our heavenly Father, the model father is a thoughtful father. His family is his good pleasure and he never ceases to think of them. His unselfish thoughtfulness helps him to be:
- understanding in every situation
- kind in both word and deed
- attentive and sympathetic to each member of his family according to their individual needs.
The model father is honorable. As a husband, he is not a tyrant, instead he lives with his wife with understanding and ascribes honor to her, knowing that she is not built to endure heavy burdens (1 Peter 3:7). He makes every effort to foster peace in his household and among his children (Proverbs 20:3). He teaches his family to honor the Lord’s Day (Isaiah 58:13-14). Above all, he conducts himself in an honorable manner that God may be glorified when evil people speak against him (1 Peter 2:11-12).
The model father knows how to encourage his children in love. He understands the damage that the tongue can inflict (James 3:5-6). Words pack a powerful punch. They can inflict far greater damage than the “sticks and stones that could break their bones.” The model father corrects and discipline his children with kind words, being careful not to scar their innocent hearts.
Lastly, the model father is reliable because he knows that his children need a good, strong, reliable father image. For a daughter such a reliable father image is even more important. The image that she see in her father will be her image of men. She will be drawn to a husband who embodies the qualities of her father.
A father without clear convictions in life is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. He is unstable and lacks consistency in whatever he does. The model father is a wise father who trusts God without doubting. Because he is wise, he has established his family on the Rock, which is Christ.
Fathers, on this Father’s Day, remember these six values:
Fathers, take the FATHER challenge: Define your godly characteristics and then communicate them to your family, for this is the will of our heavenly Father for ultimate creation — Adam.
