The Bible says that our God is holy. He is perfect in every way. He is morally excellent and His integrity is unmatched. Because God is holy, His holiness sets Him apart from His creation. When God created man it was His intention that we experience all of His glory.Man is God’s ultimate creation. We did not evolve from a lesser species into what we are, we were created just the way we are.
God is holy, holy holy, the whole earth is full of His glory. Whenever God revealed Himself to man, in each encounter the scriptures mention His holiness. Isaiah mentioned God as “the Holy One” more than 30 times. Because of His holiness, God cannot accept, or even look upon sin.
What It Means To Be Holy
To be holy means to be separate from evil by not associating with evil. It doesn’t mean that we are not to have non-Christian friends. Even Jesus mingled with the religious outcasts of His day. It means that if we do associate with non-Christians we should demonstrate that we are different by not conforming to their habits, ways, speech and thoughts.
The word holy is the Hebrew word qadesh. The meaning of holy is separate. It comes from an ancient Semitic word qadosh and it signifies pure and devoted.
In the Old Testament qadosh has a strongly religious connotation. In one sense the word describes an object or place or day to be holy with the meaning of devoted or dedicated to a particular purpose: “The priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel…” Particularly the Sabbath is devoted as a day of rest: “If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, then you shall delight yourself in the Lord…” These verses are based on Gen 2:3 where the Lord sanctified, or dedicated, the sabbath.
God has dedicated Israel as His people. They are holy by their relationship to the holy God. All of Israel are holy in a sense. “ They gathered together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, ‘You take too much upon yourselves, for all the congregation is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them…'”
When the Bible calls God holy it means that God is separate. God is so far above and beyond us that He seems almost totally foreign to us. To be holy is to be different in a special way.
The Old Testament teaches that God is “holy.” God is the Holy One of Israel. His name is Holy. God makes a declaration of His sovereign holiness in this statement: “No one is holy like the Lord, for there is none besides You, nor is there any rock like our God.”
Why We Should Strive To Be Holy
The Apostle Paul reminds us that we should present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy, acceptable to God because it is our reasonable service. It is the least that we can do considering all that God has done for us. We should not allow those who do not know God as we do to conform us into their likeness, but we should allow God to transform us into His likeness by renewing our minds, that we might prove to them what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
He goes on to tell us why we should glorify God in our bodies. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. As members of the family of God, we belong to Christ because we were bought with the precious blood of Jesus, therefore we should glorify God in our bodies.
