God Is Love

What Is Love?

God is LoveGod is love. But how can we comprehend God’s love when love has been described in so many different ways, its true meaning has perhaps been lost. Webster’s dictionary defines love as (1): a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties; (2): attraction based on sexual desire; (3): affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests.

People’s love is based on feelings and emotions that can change from one minute to the next. But is love really based on feelings? To find the answer let us look to the word of God.

What Does The Bible Say About Love?

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…”

The Bible teaches that God is love. God does not force Himself on anyone. God is kind to everyone, even those who do not love Him. Jesus did not exalt Himself above others when he was on earth in the flesh, nor die He covet what others had. He was content to live a humble life without complaining. God does not demand anything from anyone. God always looks out for the best interest of others.

One of the greatest expressions of love in the Bible is found in John 3:16:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

God desires that we choose to spend eternity with Him. Contrary to what many people believe, it is  not difficult to gain eternal life. People think you have to stop living a normal life and become a spiritual guru in order to go to spend eternity with God. But the scripture says all you have to do is believe in the Son of God and you will experience eternal life with God.

God Is Unconditional Love

Love is one of the attributes of God. God is the perfect example of unconditional love. Because God is love, He is forgiving. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The love of a parent is about as close to an example of unconditional love as we can get in this physical realm. A good parent will love their children when they are good and when they are not so good. They won’t stop loving their children if they don’t meet their expectations. They may be disappointed, but they won’t stop loving them. God is our heavenly Father and He loves us with the love of a perfect parent and His love goes far beyond our definition of love.

Unconditional love is not based on emotions or feelings. God’s love is unconditional and He loves us just because He is love.
