Surround Yourself With Faith

by Eric Dunbar

surround yourself with faithDid you know that your faith can be affected by the unbelief of others? Unbelief — whether it is directly from you, or influenced by people in your close circle of friends and acquaintances — will prevent you from receiving anything from God.

There is a story in the Bible about a man named Jairus who sought Jesus to come and heal his daughter who was dying of a terminal illness. Jairus was obviously a godly man, being a overseer in the synagogue.

When he had found Jesus he fell down at His feet and begged Him to come to his house to heal his twelve-year-old daughter, for she was dying. As Jesus went, on the way to Jairus’ house, a large crowd of people assembled around Him. There was a woman in the crowd who had a flow of blood that had lasted for twelve years. She had spent all her money going to different physicians, but none of them were able to heal her. She had heard about Jesus, how He went around healing the sick and raising the dead, so she said within, “If I can only touch the tip of His garment I will be healed.” So she made her way through the crowd and came from behind and touched the very tip of His garment and immediately her flow of blood stopped.

Jesus immediately stopped and looking at the crowd He said, “Who touched Me?” No one answered. But Jesus knew that someone had touched Him said again, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me. The woman was afraid to come forth because she was unclean, if she were exposed she could face being banished. But when the woman saw that she had been exposed, she came forth. Then she fell down before Jesus and told Him in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she was healed immediately.

While Jesus was speaking to the woman, someone came from Jairus’ house and told him, “Don’t trouble the Teacher any further. Your daughter is dead.” But Jesus turned to Jairus and said, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and your daughter will be made well.”

Although Jairus had great faith, Jesus knew that those in Jairus’ immediate circle of friends and acquaintances did not have faith. He knew that their unbelief would cause Jairus and his wife to doubt so He did not allow anyone to go inside with Him except His disciples, Jairus, and the mother of the child. When they entered the house, Jesus put everyone outside, then He took the child by the hand and told her to arise, and immediately she got up.

Have you ever prayed for something and it seemed as if you were praying in the wind? Perhaps you’ve been praying for a healing, only to get a bad report from the doctor. Maybe you’ve prayed to be delivered from an addiction that is destroying your life. But don’t despair, just believe God, and you will be healed. Don’t look at the circumstances, just believe God, and you will be delivered from your addiction.

Faith is a powerful substance. If you have faith in God and do not doubt, anything is possible. When the circumstances look contrary to your faith, don’t allow your unbelieving friends to influence your faith. Surround yourself with people of faith and just believe.
