People would define God as a deity; a supernatural being with supernatural powers far beyond that of any human. But God is much more. Since the beginning of recorded history — about 6,000 years ago — historians have cataloged more than 3,700 supernatural beings, of which there are an estimated 2,870 deities. In the Hindu religion alone there are 330 million gods and goddesses. So, just how many gods are there? Religious skeptics of the Bible, as well as those who believe there is no god have argued this point for centuries, and to this day there has been no absolute resolve to this question.
No one can explain God’s existence. The only way one can realize God is through faith. The Bible says that whoever seeks God must believe that He exists. God wants us to know the He is whatever we need Him to be. When Moses asked God to identify Himself, God answered, “I Am Who I Am.” This is who God is… He is who He is, and He will be whatever we need Him to be whenever we need Him.
If you really want to know who God is, all you have to do is look up at the sky on a clear dark night. The first of God’s creations, the heavens declare the Glory of God. They testify of the majesty and glory of God on a level that takes your breath away. The universe is so large it would take inconceivable numbers to calculate its vastness.
The size of the universe is so immense, the only way we can comprehend it is with the imagination. God “stretched out the heavens” so marvelously until we can only speculate on the size of the universe. It is believed that there are at least 100 billion (100,000,000,000) individual galaxies in the universe. Many of these galaxies are comprised of 200 billion (200,000,000,000) stars or more. To help us understand these large numbers of stars, the British Astronomer and Astrophysicist, Sir James Jeans, speculated that the total numbers of stars in the universe could equal or surpass the total number of grains of sand on all the seashores in all the world. And in many cases each star is separated from its neighboring star by millions of miles.
When we take all of glory and magnificence of the universe into consideration, there is no way that it could have just happened by sheer chance. When we look at the universe we stand in awe of the magnificent power of its Creator that surpasses all human understanding.
To fully understand who God is, we have to move from the realm of the physical to the spiritual realm. There is no way our finite minds can understand the nature of a finite God.To do that, we need something beyond a telescope, something beyond our own intellect and experience. So God revealed Himself to us in the form of His word, the Bible. The Bible clarifies our understanding of the God who made the heavens, and us. When you read the Bible with an open mind, and more importantly, an open heart, you will begin to discern the deepest thoughts and feelings of the Creator.
The Key Attributes of God
God wants us to know the truth concerning who He is. If we only see God the way we want to see Him, then we are doing no more than creating an idol god. Jesus came to reveal the God as our heavenly Father. And God has revealed Himself in His written word. Any deviation from that insight from Him is a made-up god.
The attributes of God are invisible because God Himself is invisible. But His attributes can be clearly seen being understood by the things He has made. When we look at the night sky, the trees, or the birds perched on their branches, surely we discern that these things could not have come into existence on their own. Everything we see is by the design of the Creator.
He gives life to all spirits. When we think about a spirit a ghost comes to mind. A ghost is a supernatural being that does not have a body. God is the Supreme supernatural being, and although God is Spirit, He has a body, but His body is not like a human body.
Although God is Spirit, He is a living person. Throughout the Bible God is referred to as the living God. He is not like the gods of the religions of the world. Their gods have mouths that do not speak, eyes that cannot see, ears that cannot hear, hands that cannot do anything and feet that cannot walk. God has intellect, emotions, and will. God thinks, He feels, and He acts. Theses are qualities that only a living person can have. Our God is alive… Continue reading
A simple way to define wisdom is that it is the ability to use acquired knowledge. Wisdom and knowledge go hand-in-hand. In the Bible, wisdom and knowledge are often mentioned together (Jeremiah 10:12; Romans 11:33; Colossians 2:3).
The wisdom of God devised a foolproof plan whereby He would redeem His beloved seed of Adam from death. The wisdom of God recognized the futility of our works. No amount of our own goodness, works, morality or religious worship can gain acceptance with God. With God, good people, moral people, religious people and non-religious people are the same. All of these groups fall short of the righteousness of God… Continue reading
The Bible says, “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…”
One of the greatest expressions of love in the Bible is found in John 3:16:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
God desires that we choose to spend eternity with Him. Contrary to what many people believe, it is not difficult to gain eternal life. People think you have to stop living a normal life and become a spiritual guru in order to go to spend eternity with God. But the scripture says all you have to do is believe in the Son of God and you will experience eternal life with God… Continue reading
The Bible says that our God is holy. He is perfect in every way. He is morally excellent and His integrity is unmatched. Because God is holy, His holiness sets Him apart from His creation. When God created man it was His intention that we experience all of His glory.Man is God’s ultimate creation. We did not evolve from a lesser species into what we are, we were created just the way we are.
God is holy, holy holy, the whole earth is full of His glory. Whenever God revealed Himself to man, in each encounter the scriptures mention His holiness. Isaiah mentioned God as “the Holy One”more than 30 times. Because of His holiness, God cannot accept, or even look upon sin… Continue reading
The definition of sovereign is principal; chief; supreme. The sovereignty of God speaks of God as the chief Being in the universe and the supreme power in the universe. Although God is in control of all things, He sometimes chooses to let certain events happen according to the natural laws which He has put in motion.
God is sovereign in that He stands all alone among the gods of the world. There is nothing in the universe that is outside of God’s authority and influence. God is sovereign in that He has no limitations whatsoever… Continue reading
Because of His love for us, God is merciful. One of God’s fundamental attributes is God’s mercy. Because God is merciful toward us, He desires that we be with Him forever. God’s love and His mercy are inseparable. It was God’s mercy that allowed His Son to be condemned in our place at the cross, thus Jesus became the sacrificial lamb for our sins. God’s mercy shows His compassion for mankind. Justice has been satisfied at the cross, therefore God can justifiably show mercy to everyone who has chosen to follow Christ… Continue reading
Everything that God has promised will come to pass because God is faithful. His faithfulness is a guarantee that He cannot lie, and what He has said in the Bible about Himself is true. Jesus even said that He is the Truth. Our hope of obtaining eternal life is built on His faithfulness… Continue reading
The one attribute of God that we should always be mindful of, it is God is omnipresent. When we say God is omnipresent, it means that God is everywhere at the same time. His presence knows no boundaries. This truth is taught throughout the Bible as the phrase “I am with you always” is repeated 22 times in both the Old and New Testaments. Jesus even uttered these words of assurance to His disciples after telling them to take the message of the gospel to the entire world… Continue reading
But for many people this statement brings controversy. For example, when people experience an emotionally catastrophic event, such as the death of someone close to them, they might ask, “Where was God?” But God is omnipresent — everywhere simultaneously — and He sees and knows everything that happens anywhere.
When we say God is eternal we mean God is self-existent. The eternal God of the Bible has always been and He will forever be. One of the names of God in the Bible is El Olam, Hebrew for “God of eternity; God the everlasting; God for ever.” God is eternal because God is the Creator who possesses never-ending wisdom and power. He was before all time and all worlds. He is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. The best way to describe eternity is it goes back in time with no beginning and it goes forward into the future with no end… Continue reading
